To my dearest PLM-BMC 2-3 Classmates,

This year has been very hard for me. It gave me a lot of tears and smiles. Although there were times I’ve been a super villain, and tried to think of different ways to kill everyone, I’m still your ever joyful, happy, fun loving Vice President.

Without all of you, I won’t be this strong. Arigatougozaimashita BMC 2-3! Thank you! 🙂

This is what happens when I read a book. I’ve been so affected with it that I question myself. “A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.” – William Styron Read the rest of this entry »

Why so serious?

Life is very hard. It would be harder, if you’re thinking too much of it. Enjoy it but control yourself.

“Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding…” – Ralph Waldo Emerson (Brainyquote).

October 15,2012. What a normal sunny day it is! Normal? This day marked a new era. A New Era of Hope. A New Era of Success. A New Era of Peace. Peace? Yes, P-E-A-C-E. This day is the day that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Philippine Goverment signed the framework agreement. An agreement establishing the Bangsamoro (PhilStar).

For us, normal citizens of the country, we are a little bit confused. Bangsamoro? We already have ARMM, what’s the need to establish a new entity in the Philippines. This entity is for our Mindanao brothers and sisters.

Here at Metropolitan Manila, we are not aware of the events in the South. Mindanao has been a victim of violence. Violence that killed not just a community but also a family. The war between the Army and some Mindanao people craving for justice and appreciation. There are also on going discrimination between Muslims and non-Muslims in the island. Discrimination that resulted inequality in cities and rights.

Bangsamoro, might be the answer for these conflicts. But what is Bangsamoro? What is this entity? And how would it affect us Filipino citizens?

Bangsamoro, as defined in Wikipedia, refers to ” people who are natives of the Sulu archipelago, parts of Mindanao, and parts of Palawan in the Philippines, and parts of Sabah in neighboring Malaysia at the time of conquest or colonization”. The word is a combination of words bangsa meaning people and moro meaning Muslims (Wikipedia).

But in the current peace pact Bangsamoro is the new autonomous political entity (NPE) replacing the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Philstar). Bangsamoro is a state with in a state. Bangsamoro will have their own government, own territory and internal sovereignty. Bangsamoro would have their own Bangsamoro Basic Law which would act as their constitution or basis for forthcoming statutes (Philstar).

It is time for our Mindanaoan brothers and sisters to be recognized. I am not against the Bangsamoro but if not regulated might result to another war. A part of the peace treaty is that  “The Central Government will have reserved powers, the Bangsamoro Government shall have its exclusive powers, and there will be concurrent powers shared by the Central Government and the Bangsamoro Government” (Philstar).

Sharing of powers is not bad but giving it might be a little problem. In my observation, it’s truly better that the Mindanao would have their own entity. Mindanao has been unappreciated of all its contributions in the Philippines. Many factories are being established there. Mindanao has been the root of our culture. History shows this.

We should be reminded that in every great power comes greater responsibilities. We are responsible for our actions and all our words. Bangsamoro, I wish, to be used in a proper way. It is used for peace, reconciliation and recreation. Creation of a new world where Muslims and non-Muslims are with each other. My dream community might become a reality after all.

We are all familiar with the humble beginning of Cinderella from being a maid and a slave of her own stepsister and stepmother. Until one night, a fairy Godmother came and made her fairytale wish come true. Fairy Godmothers do not exist in reality but dreams do.

Dream plus Hardwork would eventually result in success and prosperity.  A gentleman used this formula in order to reach his goals. And that man is what I am about to say to all of you.

Living in the dirty streets of Moriones, unlike any other Senators, he came from a poor family. He is the second from his nine younger siblings (Wikipedia).  In an early age, he needed to work hard and help his parents in selling seafood in the market. Because of this, he had to stop attending at Isabelo Delos Reyes. After saving enough money, he began to study again and finished his elementary at Holy Child Catholic School then graduated high school at Mapua Institute of Technology in Intramuros (Senate). He later took Business Administration at University of the Philippines – Diliman Campus then took a Master’s degree in the same profession.

He started working as an accountant and adviser before establishing his own business with an initial capital of P10,000 (Senate). He started as a gravel and sand contractor. Later he took a loan in a low interest rural bank and began to start a housing company (Wikipedia).

The difference between his business and others is that he sells a house and lot because in those years lots were only available in the market (Wikipedia). His house and lot business began to float in the Philippine market overcoming his target income and reached P1.5 Billion.

His strategy is not to sell houses for rich people. His target audiences are those Filipino families in the Lower Class and the Middle Class. He also wanted Filipino entrepreneurs to achieve the dreams that the person want to attain.

He was recognized by different business institutions making him one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of 1986. He also received the Agora Award for Marketing Management in 1989 and Most Outstanding CPA by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1990. He was declared as one of the Most Outstanding UP Alumnus in 1991 then gained the Most Distinguished Alumnus last 2004 because of his remarkable business achievements (Senate).

He is very compassionate and helpful to other people. In order to help those poor families, he established the Villar Foundation in 1995 (Wikipedia). The Villar foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to help people in poor communities by giving livelihood projects (Wikipedia). The foundation also helps Overseas Filipino Workers who are trapped in other countries that cannot go home due to lack of money.

He began entering public service to accommodate more people. Landsliding the local elections, he run for the Congress on 1998 (Senate). After becoming a House Speaker, he went to the Senate and became the Senate President of 2001. He was recorded as the first post-war senator to hold both high positions in the Government (Senate).

While in the position, he created laws concerning entrepreneurs and women. He authored R.A. 8289 or the “New Magna Carta for Small and Medium Enterprises” and R.A. 9262 or the “Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act” (Wikipedia). There are also other laws which he supported.

According to senate.gov.ph, “Manny Villar dreams to help and inspire Filipinos to fulfill their dreams thru hard work and determination (Sipag at Tiyaga) – the same values that helped him conquer poverty and succeed in life”.

Manny Villar is an example of a hard working Filipino who wants to achieve his dreams. Achieving success is a step by step procedure for us to follow our certain goal. He used his experiences as inspiration to be wealthy. Due to his past, he easily understands the need of the public.

Manny Villar, though voted in the Cybercrime Law, is not against the freedom of speech and expression. His skills, knowledge and background shows how Villar used to be us. He feels us. He knows our pain. Of all the senators, he is the only one knowledgeable and compassionate to the public.

Manny Villar has an astounding story we should listen to. He gave life to the proverb in returning to your past and helping others in need. Everyone is a dreamer. But only a few believes…

How to avoid Sottofying

A sin in the world of the academe. This is a crime, though not punishable by death, would still bring you to the cone of shame. It has been a rule in the scholarly world to use sources carefully and cite them. Once this is not done, a crime shall be committed, and that crime is Plagiarism.

This crime made a noise in the country after Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto when he plagiarized his speech not once but twice. The latest of his plagiarism case is the concluding part of his speech which includes a tagalized version of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s 1966 speech (Palatino 9).

Plagiarism. Scholars define it as stealing one’s idea or word without giving the source proper credits (Merriam Webster). According to Wikipedia, Plagiarism is the using other people/author’s idea, language, thoughts or expression and claiming them as one’s work. In short, plagiarism is stealing.

This act can be committed intentionally or unintentionally. Before I entered college, I’m not aware of using sources. Usually, I use them but not credit them despite the fact that I know plagiarism. Today, these views have change. A professor of mine has reminded us about these intellectual steal. Of course, as a college student and a soon-to-be Mass Communication practitioner, we would always be fiddling with facts and sources. Here’s a guide on how to avoid sottofying, I mean, plagiarizing.

Cite. Use citation if the phrase is a not a common knowledge or not your own opinion or beliefs. Citation is still important even though you rephrase the sentence (MLA Handbook 3). The idea is still remained in the paraphrased work.

Use quotation marks when needed. Quotation marks should be used when citing the author’s own words (MLA Handbook 3). This is the most popular kind of plagiarism. Some people use the same sentence because if it is paraphrased the idea or message of the piece might change. It is classified as a plagiarized work if it doesn’t have any citation or quotation mark. If you are adding a word or a phrase in the borrowed material, you can use brackets inside the quoted passage.

Works Cited List. Cited materials in the body should reflect in the last page of the work called Works Cited or Bibliography. This is a list in alphabetical order containing all information of your sources. This is a place of references.

Making it a hobby. Citing sources and giving credits to it should be a hobby. Like me, I’ve been used to cite my sources in any subject just to avoid plagiarizing.

Plagiarizing is condemned crime in the academic world. It can lose your credibility as a professional if you fail to give credit. Just like Sotto, you’re going to be a laughing stock of the literary world.

Be aware of your writing. Remember to give credit to any sources you have in your hands.

Prevention is better than cure.

Today, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law. I lobby for a victim of it. I lobby for his right being deprived. I lobby of a man so great, so special and so extraordinary.

He was born September 11, 1917, is a soldier of the World War II. He was also a victim of the ill fated war and at the age of 25 was called by the Republic to become the combat intelligence officer of the 21st Infantry Division (New World Encyclopedia).

He, too, walked with the other prisoners of war in the infamous Bataan Death March, survived and imprisoned at Fort Santiago. Then, escaped and our own soon-to-be President joined the Guerrilla movement and led them. He was one of the very successful commanders that the Guerrilla Movement ever had (New World Encyclopedia).

He was a wrestler, a boxer, a swimmer and one of the greatest debater UP ever had. While studying Law at University of the Philippines, Diliman, he faced tough challenges we cannot compare to us.

Tougher, Braver, Larger scandals he have been part of. The most famous of it is the 1935 Political Massacre to Julio Nalundasan (New World Encyclopedia). The guy was a political enemy of his’ father.

While at prison, he didn’t stop studying. Instead, he used the time to examine more of his knowledge and at the time of the 1938 Bar Examinations, he topped and got one of the highest scores in its history. I repeat, History (Asian History).

He defended himself in his own trial and guess what happened? He was proven guilty and his case was dismissed by the court (New World Encyclopedia).

During his Presidency from 1965-1986, the Philippines had a tiger economy, being the second most progressive country after Japan in whole Asia (Celoza 46). Take note, the Philippines at that time after war was the second most destroyed after Poland.

During his 1965 inaugural speech, he told the people that he wants political and economical improvement in the country. He sees the Philippines to be united and not an archipelago (Wikiquote).

He liberalized the Philippine Trade and improved the Philippine Agriculture. President Marcos constructed roads, bridges and public works that includes 16,000 kilometers of feeder roads, some 30,000 lineal meters of permanent bridges, a generator with an electric power capacity of on million kilowatts (1,000,000 kW), water services to eight regions and 38 localities (New World Encyclopedia).

He wanted the country to sufficient in food especially rice. The Philippines at his time exported rice pricing $7 million to different parts of Southeast Asia and known to be a rice producing country and the US (Asian History).

He responded the increasing energy consumption and thought of it futuristically. He introduced the use of geothermal resources. Reacting to the early 1970s oil shock, Marcos created a major government program to find, develop and generate electricity from hot rocks deep in the ground. Since then, the Philippine government has championed this form of energy (Celoza 50).

Geothermal power now accounts for about 28 percent of the electricity generated in the Philippines (Celoza 50). He established the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant to answer the upcoming electricity crisis that would benefit the urban people because of high electric bills (Youtube).

He strengthened our foreign relations. He was one of the forebears of the Association of South East Asian Nations together with Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to oppose communism (Youtube). He also played a major role in helping Vietnam during its worsening problem on communism creating a civil war in their state. He claimed Sabah as part of our country but failed to do so.

Marcos was already a gold digger, literally. According to an interview of the Independent Wolrd to Imelda Marcos, he was a gold trader. He had a mountain of gold when he entered politics in 1949. By the late 1950s, Marcos had a personal fortune of 7,500 tons of gold, she claims. In the 1970s, after gold went up to $800, the Marcos family, she says, was worth a staggering $35 billion when Bill Gates was still a dropout software developer (Asian History).

Ferdinand Edralin Marcos is truly one of the best Presidents we ever had. But some say he don’t deserve to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani or even have a full military honor. Why? It’s politics. Anyone who remembers Angelo Reyes? The guy who killed himself? Where do you think he is now?

“Reyes, who committed suicide at the height of a Senate investigation on corruption in the AFP, was finally laid to rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani with full military honors befitting a former chief of staff and Defense secretary… (AFP bids farewell to Reyes with 21-gun salute)”.

A full military honor? Libingan ng mga Bayani? Corruption? See? The irony of the justice here in the Philippines. Do you think Marcos who is way better than Angelo Reyes do not deserve those treatments.

Now what do you think about the history? Has the facts surprised you?.

I’ve told you about his achievements and the things he did to our country. If he really don’t deserve to be given full military honors or even be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, then who does?

I have a dream one day he is recognized.

I have a dream one day justice shall prevail.

I have a dream one day to see him personally.

He opened the door but the people chose to close it. We should learn from our history’s mistakes. We should go over it but not forget it. We should not stop learning and uncover the hidden reality.

Mabuhay si Marcos!

Mabuhay si Marcos!

Mabuhay ang Republika ng Pilipinas!

Plays! Plays everywhere!

Definitely I’m having more fun in College of Mass Communication, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila as our college held a Theatre Week organized by the Juniors. I freakin’ ❤ watching plays and musicals. I hope you enjoy my review!

I’ve arranged it from the least to the most remarkable acts I’ve seen.

6. Ang Ikapitong Utos (the 7th Command)

Genre: Romance, Sexy

Produced by:

Because Nimfa is unable to bear a child, Hans begins to find another woman. He stumbles upon a woman named Ingrid who he begins to have a child with. She gave birth to two children. As the story goes, Hans’ conscience begins to disturb him leading to a break up scene between him and Nimfa and Ingrid. Due to misery, he tries to kill himself but Ingrid is ahead of him and poisoned him with wine.

Excellent story! I love it. The script. I’ve observed that they are saying the same sentences and beginning to become redundant.

Some of the actors and actresses are lovable like Nimfa. Her seductive technique (though not that seductive) is beginning to be funny, but it is alright, it made the theater a little light. They need more practice, I’d say. Some are not exerting the emotion needed. Some are face blank or poker faced though their voice and scene needs to be sad.

The sexy scene is also remarkable. even though a little sensitive, I kind of more like the way they executed the scene by means of dance. It is more professional than actual kissing or touching.

All I can say is that, a little more practice to be perfect and some have the potential. Congratulations!

3 out of 5 stars 🙂

5. Litrato (Picture)

Genre: Romance, Thriller

Produced by: OBSKURA Productions

About a twisted love triangle that includes incest and adultery. Andrew is Gab’s younger brother. Gab is married to Leigh and they are having a baby. It is revealed that Andrew is secretly in love with Gab and Leigh had an affair with Andrew because they were both drunk and she is also secretly in love with him. Gab killed Leigh after knowing about the affair and discovering that the baby is Andrew’s but framed his brother for the crime… The picture symbolizes the past.

First, I would like to congratulate the production designers and the stage managers. They have justified the stage with all the props and the motif of the play. Bow down! They were really great. The Video presentations were also great but it should be lessened because the essence of acting on the stage is quite disappearing.

Second, the actors especially the one who played Andrew. He did made me feel happy, sad, anxious and all the emotions that he showed especially his undying love. Andrew vindicated the role and it was simply wow. I also loved his jokes because they were really funny. The girl who played Leigh is also good, the problem is the way she showed her sad emotion, the pity she is hoping Andrew to give him should be more dramatic. She should’ve kneeled and let the emotions overpower her. It would be more dramatic that way but still she is one of the best actress I’ve seen so far. Good job girl!  You have a future in show business.

Third, the story it is well wrought up and one it is very exciting. I just love the surprises they presented though the lines gave clues about the twists easily. Also, it’s too short and the ending is not that satisfying.

Congratulations Litrato! It was a great act.

3.5 out of 5 stars 🙂

4. S.A.S. (Sino ang Salarin)

Genre: Mystery, Romance

Produced by:

Congressman Dela Cruz is killed and the only suspect is their maid Minda. Minda after serving the Dela Cruz family for 50 years have learned the different secrets the family is hiding. All of them have their own motives to kill Congressman Dela Cruz. Colline Dela Cruz is a loving girl but becomes devastated learning his father ordered to kill her boyfriend for her to marry the Mayor’s son. Eric Dela Cruz is an adopted child of the Dela Cruz. He was adopted for image improvement of the Congressman. At home, he is abused, beaten and shouted. Liza Dela Cruz and Councilor Joaquin Hernandez is having a secret affair that the Congressman, Liza’s husband, don’t know.

Bow down! Literally, I want an autograph of the writer. It was written very well. The dialogues were breath taking and shocking. The story though very complicated is very well said.

My favorite character is the Congressman. He showed how dirty politicians are behind those flashy cameras. Truth be told, he portrayed it exactly. Though portrayed good, he would need more practice. Another remarkable character is Liza. the actress is very good in portraying that bitchy role. She is so good that I want to kill her… Char! But it was really well portrayed… Hooray for that actress! Another is Colline. I’ve felt her sorrow when she discovered her father’s sin. I’ve felt pity for that  character. She is so kind and wonderful but alone.

Some questions are not answered like who killed the Congressman or who is the Congressman is talking to on the phone. Could it be the true killer? They should also exploited Colline and Eric’s life. why do they act like that inside the house?

Over all another best!

3.5 out of 5 stars 🙂

3. REBAND (Rakrakan Express Band)

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Musical

Produced by: InfiniTHREE Productions

A story about a rock band composed of different people with different genders and different personalities. They disbanded because of their own personal affiliations, but soon got together to bring back the true meaning of Pinoy Rock Music.

Well played! That’s all I can say! The story is very touching and it was great though it didn’t left an impact on me. I am also a music lover so I’ve appreciated their genre. I would like to mention Ms. Nicole Anne Reyes. She is a very gifted singer though she needs more practice because she’s having tune problems. I’ve heard the cast rehearsing and that made me excited. They have a very good blending. Their voices mixed so well. I appreciated the practice than the staged. Some of the singers in the staged became flat and out-of-tune. I do admit I am not a good singer but I appreciate good music.

The actress that played the mother of Nate was so promising! She played her role so well that I’ve felt she was really a mother. She knows how to control the voice and how to scold and be angry at someone. Also, the gay member (younger version) is also a good comedian! I mean, I laughed so hard in his lines and expressions. It made the story a little light and gave it humor which is very good. Nate (younger version) is also a good actor. His role is the most touching of all because the role he represented are the true “rockers” who don’t just appreciate rock but also loved it.

The act, though it didn’t give an impact, had been very great! Good job guys! They changed my perception of heavy metals and rock bands so much! They showed how teens today react unjustly to rock lovers in the country. Before we judge anyone, we should know him first. Congratulations guys!

3.5 out of 5 stars 🙂

2. Hindi Namin Nalalaman (We Never Knew)

Genre: Romance, Sexy, Fantasy

Produced by:

A boy accidentally went back in time and fell in love with the younger version of his mother. This incident has been affecting the present and it was all blamed to the boy in the end.

So sexy! All I can say is that it is Rated SPG! Strict Parental Guidance! Char! But seriously, the play is also one that marked on my mind. It’s about incest and unconditional love through time. There are technical problems in the act so it created a little misunderstanding between the audience and the actors. There are also too many dead air that made me a little bored. The sexy part is also intimidating that makes you feel a little uncomfortable. Hahaha.

The actors and actresses were all great! Let’s give another salute to them. The ending is also unsatisfying. I’m surprised that the act already ended. They should’ve told us what happened. It’s feeble.

The stage designs should have focused more on the transition of time. If it’s time travel, they should’ve shown a big difference.

The story was really fascinating! It was a really great story but somewhat made me feel uneasy because there’s a scene where the younger mother and son had a sexual affair. I mean, like seriously, who would imagine doing his own mom. Eeeew. Hahaha.

The actors and actresses played well also though they needed more practice. They should give the emotions needed to the certain scene. Squeeze more of the drama. They should not fill the role, they should be the character. But still, they did a great job!

A better translation of We Never Knew is Hindi Namin Inakala.

All in all. They did a great job! Congratulations to them!

3.5 out of 5 stars 🙂

1. Rehas (Jail)

Genre: Horror, Drama

Produced by:

Aira Cruz’s family is killed and due to her hysteria, she hit a girl by her car. She was then jailed. On the prison, her faith was tested by two demons but saved by a Pastor who brought her back to the light.

It… Was… Epic! The best! Bravo! The act gave a chill to the bone and it was well played. Some questions are not answered like who killed her family but it didn’t make an effect to me. It was very good, not-so polished but one of the best!

Thumbs up for the demons. Characters well portrayed and justified. The conflict in the play is it is set in different locations so it is very hard. The other actors and actresses were also great.

That’s all I can say. It left me speechless.

4 out of 5 stars 🙂

Watch out for more reviews! As I write this, I can already feel the pressure on my batch. These plays were all wonderful and creative. Next year, we would be the one to be criticized or admired. But we will do our best to maintain the bar that these batch set. One of the best, most resourceful, most creative batch! Batch 2012-2013 Juniors!

Congratulations!

Dreams

As me and my friends walked towards the road, we passed by a “No Jaywalking Sign” then suddenly a story hit me and here what imagination brought me to create:

There are two lovers studying at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. While being bored and not listening to the teacher, he begins to daydream. He dreams of having a family with the girl where they are both successful. They have a child and they are having fun in the park but the dream was interrupted when the teacher ended the class.

While walking home, the boy encouraged the girl to use the underpass instead of jaywalking. The girl refused.

“Let’s use the underpass, it’s safer there”, the boy said.

“NO. It’s already dark and besides there are no traffic enforcers to catch us…” his lover answered.

“It’s not because of that… It’s just safer there and look there are too many fast cars on the road… They might hit us…” the boy told her.

Because of the girl’s stubbornness, she ran across the road. Incidentally, a car was about to hit her. The boy loved the girl so much that he is willing to give his life. He pushed the girl to the safe side and… Screech! Everything goes black.

“Too many dreams are crashed by cars because of our stubbornness.”

“Abide the law for you, for me and for everybody.”

Screen becomes white again, it is shown that the boy wasn’t hurt but shocked. The car had stopped immediately. The girl, crying, immediately went to the boy’s arms and hugged him.

Fin.

This is what my imagination created instead of doing my paper. Back to reality, this story is somewhat true because there are really persons that are hard headed enough, they don’t think their safety…
